Headshot Session Preparation Guide: Look and Feel Your Best

Getting a professional headshot is an exciting step in building your personal brand—and the results last for years. To help you make the most of your session, this guide walks you through everything you need to know, from getting camera-ready to knowing what happens after the shoot.

What to Wear

Choosing the right outfit is key to a polished, confident headshot. Here are some style tips:

  • Dress like you would in your professional role. Consider what you’d wear for a client-facing meeting or an important presentation.

  • Stick to solid colors—neutrals, jewel tones, or colors that complement your skin tone work best.

  • Avoid loud patterns, graphics, logos, or text, which can distract from your face.

  • Choose flattering necklines (button-ups, scoop or V-necks work great).

  • Layer up. A blazer or jacket can add formality and structure.

  • Keep jewelry minimal and timeless. Choose understated pieces that enhance, not distract.

Pro Tip: Bring 2–3 outfits so we can choose what works best on camera. Keep it neat, clean, and wrinkle-free.

Hair, Makeup & Grooming Tips

A little effort goes a long way toward achieving a polished look.

For Everyone:

  • Start with clean, moisturized skin.

  • Avoid trying new skincare products right before your session to prevent any unexpected reactions.

  • Avoid too much sun exposure before your session.

  • Nails should be clean and neutral or intentionally styled — no chipped polish.

For Women:

  • Opt for photo-friendly makeup: a bit more coverage than usual, matte finishes, and well-defined features.

  • Bring powder and lip balm for touch-ups throughout the session.

  • Decide on your hair in advance—natural blowout, styled curls, or an updo—whatever feels most like you at your best. If you’d like to get multiple looks, start with your hair down and pull it up during the session.

For Men:

  • Freshly shave or trim facial hair the morning of your session.

  • Moisturize dry areas, especially around the nose and forehead.

  • Get a haircut 3–5 days before the shoot, so it looks natural but tidy.

Pro Tip: Consider hiring a professional HMUA (Hair & Makeup Artist) — ask me for referrals if you'd like!

The Night Before

Your preparation should start before the day of the shoot:

  • Get a good night's sleep—well-rested eyes and skin are more photogenic.

  • Stay hydrated and avoid excessive salt or alcohol to minimize puffiness.

  • Have your outfits cleaned and ironed, and pack a backup just in case.

The Session Day: Final Prep

  • Arrive early to give yourself time to settle in and relax.

  • Bring the following:

    • Your selected wardrobe (on hangers if possible)

    • Hairbrush/comb

    • Makeup/touch-up items

    • Lip balm and powder (especially for shine control)

    • A positive mindset!
